Building client relationships online can feel a little impersonal. But with the right approach (and a little help from me, Lorna at trumpet🎺), you can make those virtual connections just as strong as in-person ones.
1. Collaborate, don’t just sell
People don’t just want to be sold to—they want to feel part of the process. With Mutual Action Plans (MAPs), you can guide clients through every stage of the deal, together. Build out clear next steps with them and keep everyone on the same page.
Why it works: You’re not just pushing for a sale, you’re partnering with them, which builds trust and long-term relationships. You’re walking them through the process, listening to their concerns, and offering tailored solutions.
2. Stay one step ahead with insights
Ever wish you could read your client’s mind? Trumpet gets you pretty close. With real-time insights into what content they’re interacting with, you can stay ahead of the game and always be ready to help them at the right time.
Pro tip: Set up alerts for key actions—like when they open a document or watch a demo—so you can follow up while the interest is hot.
3. Keep it fun and engaging
Client relationships don’t have to be all serious. Add some fun to the mix!
Trumpet pro tip: Make a note of key details, such as the holiday they’re going on next month, and drop it back into the conversation. “How was Majorca last month?”
4. Maintain eye contact
Depending on the application, when you’re sharing a screen, you can’t always see yourself, but they can still see you. Be mindful not to look bored; be present and try to look towards the camera.
5. Provide value before you’re asked
If you find something that would be useful for your client, save it and send it over. Offer updates, solutions, and tips that will help them.
Why it works: You become trusted and reliable, adding value. You’ll be seen as knowledgeable and an expert in your field—a real pro!
6. Stay organised
Being on time is late—be early. Have the tabs open and ready, and do a test screen share before they join. Have your personalised email half-prepared and ready to follow up after the meeting, summarising key topics covered and next steps.
7. Celebrate milestones together
Completion of a project, your work anniversary, their achievements—they’re your achievements too. A simple congratulations or a thoughtful gift to your favourite clients goes a long way.
8. Make it personal
Nobody likes to feel like just another number. Get to know your clients and share some personal details. There’s no need to overshare—just find some mutual ground, perhaps an interesting hobby. Let them get to know you, and invest in you as a person.
Building relationships online doesn’t have to be complicated. Just listen to their pain points, offer solutions, and be personal.
Now, go turn clients into besties!
